The Czech Republic: A Nation of Many Names

From Česko to Czechia

In 1992, the Czech Republic emerged from a peaceful split with Slovakia, gaining independence after decades of cohabitation. Seeking to establish a distinct identity for their newly formed nation, many Czech linguists advocated for "Česko" as the geographical name for their territory.

The Formal Name

However, the formal name of the state remains "Czech Republic" in English and "Česká republika" in Czech. While "Czechia" is the technical English translation of "Česko," its usage has been the subject of debate.
